Think FAST – Recognise the symptoms of stroke/transient ischaemic attack

The FAST test – FACE, ARMS, SPEECH, TIME – is a quick reference tool to help people recognise the most common symptoms of a stroke or transient ischaemic attack.  It requires an assessment of 3 specific symptoms.

Facial weakness – can the person smile?  Has their mouth or eye drooped?

Arm weakness – can the person raise both arms? Is one arm weak?

Speech – can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? Is their speech slurred or muddled?

Time – if you see any of these signs, call 999

A stroke is a medical emergency.  It can happen to anyone at any time, and happens fast.  By calling 999, you can help someone reach hospital as quickly as possible to ensure they receive a diagnosis and early medical treatment.  This will improve their chances of recovery.
